Massapolymerisation, also known as bulk polymerisation, is a method of polymer synthesis where the monomer is polymerised in its pure form without the presence of a solvent. This technique is commonly used for producing polymers such as polystyrene, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), and certain types of polyesters. The process typically occurs in a sealed reactor, allowing the reaction to proceed uniformly throughout the bulk of the monomer.

In mass polymerisation, the reaction is exothermic, meaning it releases heat as the polymer chains form. Effective temperature control is crucial to prevent thermal runaway, which can lead to uncontrolled exotherms, potential reactor failure, or even explosions. Cooling systems, such as jackets or coils, are often integrated into the reactor to manage heat generation. The absence of a solvent simplifies the purification process, as there is no need for solvent removal, but it can also make heat dissipation more challenging.

The polymerisation can proceed via free-radical, anionic, cationic, or coordination mechanisms, depending on the monomer and initiator system used. One advantage of mass polymerisation is its efficiency in producing high-purity polymers with minimal byproducts, as there is no solvent to contaminate the final product. However, the process can be limited by the viscosity of the polymerising mass, which increases as the reaction progresses, potentially restricting heat transfer and mixing.

Mass polymerisation is widely employed in industrial settings due to its simplicity and cost-effectiveness for certain monomers. It is particularly useful for producing polymers with high molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions, which are desirable for applications requiring specific mechanical or optical properties.
