Masking techniques refer to methods used to obscure, alter, or substitute data or signals in order to protect privacy, reduce risk, or enable secure processing. They are employed across fields such as data management, software development, and signal or image processing, where sensitive information must be shielded while maintaining useful structure or behavior.

In data masking, sensitive values are replaced or transformed to prevent exposure in non-production environments or during data analysis. Common approaches include static data masking, where real data are replaced with fictional but realistic values; dynamic masking, which changes data on the fly at the point of use; and tokenization, which substitutes values with non-reversible tokens. Techniques such as format-preserving masking preserve the original data format (for example, preserving a credit card number’s structure) while hiding its actual content. Other methods include redaction, data shuffling, date shifting, and numerical perturbation. Masking can be deterministic (the same input yields the same masked output) or non-deterministic (outputs vary).

Applications and considerations include helping organizations comply with privacy regulations, enabling safe software testing with realistic datasets, and reducing the risk of data leakage. Limitations include the potential reversibility of some masking schemes and the need for strong governance, access controls, and audit trails to prevent improper reconstruction of hidden information.

Beyond data privacy, masking concepts appear in other domains such as audio or visual processing, where masking refers to reducing or concealing certain signals, and in cryptography and secure computation where masked representations help protect intermediate values during processing.
