Martialists are practitioners of martial arts—structured systems of combat techniques developed for self-defense, sport, discipline, and personal development. The term is a generic label that, in practice, overlaps with martial artists and is used in various contexts to describe people who regularly train in one or more martial arts.

Martial arts cover a wide range of disciplines, from empty-hand arts such as karate, judo, taekwondo, kung fu, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu to weapon-based traditions such as fencing, kendo, eskrima, and kobudo. Some martialists train primarily for sport competition; others emphasize self-defense, conditioning, or traditional philosophies. Many study multiple arts or cross-train within a single system.

Training typically includes physical conditioning, technique drills, forms or katas, partner work (sparring or randori), and, where applicable, weapons training. Instruction occurs in dojos, gyms, clubs, or schools, and rank systems (belts, dans, or level certificates) indicate demonstrated proficiency according to the style's rules.

Philosophically, martial arts often stress discipline, respect, humility, and ethical conduct, though interpretations vary by tradition and instructor. The label martialist does not denote a single organization; instead, practitioners are associated with diverse schools, federations, or informal networks.

In modern usage, martialists participate in sport competitions, demonstrations, or film and stage work, as well as personal self-defense training. The field is global and highly diverse, with thousands of schools and styles worldwide.
