Marsruutimist is the practice and discipline of designing and optimizing routes for movement of people and goods. The term combines marsruut (route) with the agent suffix -ist and is used in Estonian to refer to professionals, methods, or systems involved in route planning. The aim is to minimize costs or travel time, respect constraints such as capacity or time windows, and improve reliability and sustainability.

Applications span road transport, public transit, logistics, field operations, and tourism. In logistics the Vehicle Routing Problem and its variants guide how fleets service customers; in public transport the focus is on timetabling and network efficiency; in autonomous systems or ride-hailing services, routing must react to changing conditions.

Core methods include shortest-path algorithms (Dijkstra, A*), mathematical formulations of VRP and TSP, multi-criteria optimization, isochrones, and time-window constraints. Real-time data such as traffic, incidents, and delivery status feed dynamic routing. Geographic information systems (GIS) and routing engines support practical implementation.

Development has roots in operations research and computer science. The vehicle routing problem was formalized around 1959 by Dantzig and Ramser, with later extensions to time windows, multiple depots, and heterogeneous fleets. The advent of digital maps and live traffic data in recent decades greatly expanded capability and adoption.

Impact and challenges include improved efficiency and lower costs, reduced fuel consumption and emissions, and better service levels. Challenges include data quality, scalability for large networks, privacy considerations, and the need for robust algorithms under uncertainty.
