A markise is a shading device attached to the exterior of a building, designed to block sun, reduce glare, and provide shelter from light rain. It is commonly installed over windows, doors, or outdoor spaces to create a more comfortable indoor environment and extend the usability of terraces and patios.

There are several types of markisen. Retractable models can be extended or retracted as needed and may be operated manually with a crank or motorized with electric motors, often integrated into smart-home systems. Fixed or semi-fixed versions offer permanent shading and may include built-in wall supports. Some markisen are cassette or semi-cassette designs, which enclose the rolled fabric for greater protection, while open designs leave the fabric exposed. Frames are typically aluminum for weight and corrosion resistance, with steel reinforced options for added strength.

Materials commonly used include fabrics made from acrylic or PVC-coated polyester, valued for UV resistance and colorfastness. The fabric may be treated to resist mold and water, and color choices range from neutral tones to patterns. Components such as brackets, axles, and joints are designed to withstand outdoor conditions, and wind sensors or rain sensors may automatically retract the system.

They can improve energy efficiency and comfort in residential and commercial settings.
