Manufakturen, the plural of Manufaktur, are production facilities where goods are manufactured through organized, centralized processes that combine skilled handwork with a developing division of labor. They concentrate production in one location and emphasize quality control and standardization, distinguishing them from purely cottage-based crafts.

The concept arose in late medieval and early modern Europe as craftspeople moved from independent workshops toward structured environments run by a master. In manufactories, tasks were subdivided among specialized workers, allowing higher output while preserving craftsmanship. The system often operated within or alongside guild structures, and merchants coordinated larger-scale production, sometimes through a putting-out arrangement housed in a single premises.

Typical sectors included textiles, glass, porcelain, metalware, and clocks. A manufactory combined centralized management with standardized components and supervision by a master or foreman. Machines were introduced gradually, but the hallmark was organization and efficiency rather than wholesale mechanization.

With the Industrial Revolution, many manufactories evolved into factories powered by steam and, later, electricity. The manufactory form influenced the development of the factory system and the division of labor in mass production. Notable historical examples include the Meissen Porcelainmanufaktur (founded 1710) and various textile manufactories across Europe.

Today, Manufakturen in German-speaking regions often refer to brands or workshops that emphasize craftsmanship within controlled processes. Modern manufakturing typically involves small or medium-scale production that blends artisanal quality with standardized methods, as seen in fashion houses, specialty foods, furniture studios, and luxury watchmaking.
