Manufacturing date refers to the date on which a product batch was produced at a facility. The date is often labeled as "Manufactured on," "MFD," "MFG date," or simply "MFD" on packaging.

The manufacturing date is primarily a traceability and quality-control tool. It allows manufacturers, distributors, and retailers to identify the production batch, manage inventory, detect trends in product quality, and facilitate recalls if a defect is found. It is especially important for products with limited shelf life, complex supply chains, or stringent regulatory oversight. Not all products display the manufacturing date; packaging requirements vary by product category and jurisdiction. In many cases, the date is embedded in a lot or batch code and stored in the product’s records rather than printed prominently on the label.

Manufacturing date is distinct from expiration date or best-before date. The expiration date indicates until when the product is expected to retain its safety or quality, whereas the manufacturing date marks the start of the product’s life.
