Mantenance is the process of preserving and restoring the functionality of assets, systems, and facilities to prevent failure and prolong useful life. The goal is reliability, safety, and cost-effective performance, achieved through planned actions rather than reactive repairs.

Mantenance activities are commonly categorized as preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance. Preventive mantenance schedules routine tasks such as inspections, lubrication, calibration, and part replacement. Predictive mantenance uses data and condition monitoring to forecast when components will fail. Corrective mantenance repairs or replaces assets after a fault occurs.

Organizations manage mantenance through standard procedures, work orders, inventories, and documentation. Modern practices often rely on computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) or enterprise asset management (EAM) software to track assets, plan tasks, and record costs.

Mantenance is applied across industries including manufacturing, transportation, energy, facilities management, and information technology. In IT, mantenance includes software updates, patch management, backups, and security checks.

Key metrics include mean time between failures (MTBF), mean time to repair (MTTR), maintenance backlog, and maintenance cost as a share of asset value. Effective mantenance reduces downtime, extends asset life, improves safety, and lowers total cost of ownership.
