Manner adverbs, or adverbs of manner, are a class of adverbs that describe the way in which an action is performed. They answer questions such as how, in what way, or with what manner something happens. In English, they most often modify verbs, but they can also modify adjectives, other adverbs, or even entire clauses to convey the texture or method of a situation.

Formation and varieties: Many English manner adverbs are formed by adding -ly to adjectives (slow → slowly, careful → carefully). However, not all adverbs of manner end in -ly (well, fast, hard). Some are irregular or base-form forms. Manner can also be expressed by multiword phrases such as “with care,” “in a hurry,” or “by hand,” which function as adverbials describing the manner of the action.

Position and usage: Adverbs of manner commonly follow the verb they modify or the verb phrase (She spoke softly; He drove carefully through the snow). They can appear after the direct object or at the end of a sentence when the meaning is clear. In addition to modifying verbs, they may occur as sentence adverbs to indicate attitude or evaluation toward the whole clause (Unfortunately, the plan failed).

Examples: She spoke softly. He ran quickly. They arranged the furniture hastily. The engineer worked with great care. Carefully, she opened the box.

Notes: Manner adverbs help convey texture and precision in description but should be distinguished from adverbs of time, place, or degree. They can be the main way a speaker conveys method, but many languages express manner with adjectives, adverbial phrases, or morphology rather than single-word adverbs.
