Mandulagyulladás, also known as tonsillitis, is an inflammation of the tonsils. The tonsils are two oval-shaped pads of tissue located at the back of the throat. They are part of the immune system and help trap germs that enter the throat.

Mandulagyulladás is most commonly caused by viral infections, such as the common cold or influenza. However, it can also be caused by bacterial infections, most notably Streptococcus pyogenes, which causes strep throat. Symptoms of mandulagyulladás typically include a sore throat, difficulty swallowing, fever, and swollen tonsils that may appear red and have white or yellow patches. Other symptoms can include a headache, rash, and swollen lymph nodes in the neck.

Diagnosis is usually made based on a physical examination and a review of symptoms. A throat swab may be performed to identify the specific cause, especially if a bacterial infection is suspected. Treatment for viral mandulagyulladás focuses on managing symptoms with rest, fluids, and over-the-counter pain relievers. Antibiotics are prescribed for bacterial infections. In recurrent or severe cases, tonsillectomy, the surgical removal of the tonsils, may be considered. While mandulagyulladás is generally not a serious condition, it can lead to complications if left untreated, such as peritonsillar abscess or rheumatic fever in the case of untreated strep throat.
