Management by Objectives, often abbreviated as MBO, is a strategic planning and management process. It involves defining specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) objectives for an organization or its employees. The MBO process typically begins with top management defining overall organizational goals. MBO emphasizes results and performance rather than just activities. It can enhance communication, provide a clear framework for performance appraisal, and increase employee commitment. However, it can also be time-consuming to implement and may lead to a focus on short-term, quantifiable goals at the expense of other important aspects of performance.
