Malaria-endemic refers to regions where malaria transmission is habitual and ongoing, sustaining the parasite’s life cycle between humans and Anopheles mosquitoes and producing regular illness within the population. In endemic areas, malaria can be year-round in tropical climates or strongly seasonal in others, with local parasite species including Plasmodium falciparum, P. vivax, P. ovale, and P. malariae, and occurrences of P. knowlesi reported in parts of Southeast Asia. The burden of disease is shaped by vector density, climate, geography, housing, and access to prevention and treatment.
