They can be configured in several ways. Fixed pulleys change the direction of a belt without changing speed, movable pulleys provide a mechanical advantage, and compound arrangements combine these features for greater force or speed changes. Pulleys can be described by groove count (single- or multi-groove) and by the drive method (belt-driven or chain-driven with sprockets).

Construction and materials vary with application. Makaralar are commonly made from steel, cast iron, aluminum, or composite materials. They include a grooved rim for proper belt seating, a bearing assembly for smooth rotation, and a method for lubrication and cooling. Proper alignment and belt tension are essential to minimize wear and energy losses.

The operating principles of makaralar influence system performance. In a simple fixed pulley, the velocity ratio is determined by pulley diameters, and the mechanical advantage is typically one. Movable pulleys offer an increased mechanical advantage based on the number of supporting rope segments. Compound pulley systems multiply this effect, while belt friction and slip affect efficiency.

Applications of makaralar span many industries. They are used in automotive engines for accessory drives, in conveyors and machine tools, in cranes and hoists, in elevators, and in various gym and industrial equipment where belt and rope drives are suitable.

Maintenance and safety considerations include regular inspection for wear, cracks, or misalignment; checking groove condition and bearing health; maintaining appropriate belt tension; and replacing worn or damaged pulleys to prevent failure and ensure reliable operation.
