Magnetstimulatsioon, often referred to as magnetic stimulation, is a non-invasive technique used in neuroscience and medicine. These magnetic pulses generate electrical currents within the targeted tissues, which can then influence neuronal activity.

The primary mechanism behind magnetic stimulation is electromagnetic induction. A rapidly changing magnetic field, produced by a coil placed near the head or body, passes through the skull or skin with minimal resistance. As the magnetic field fluctuates, it induces an electric current in the underlying neural tissue. This induced current can depolarize neurons, leading to either excitation or inhibition of neural pathways, depending on the stimulation parameters and the targeted brain region.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a widely recognized application of magnetic stimulation. TMS is used therapeutically for conditions such as depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and addiction. It is also employed in research settings to investigate brain function and map neural circuits. Other forms of magnetic stimulation exist, targeting peripheral nerves for pain management or rehabilitation.
