Magneettikuvaus, commonly known as MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), is a medical imaging technique used to create detailed images of the internal organs and structures of the body. It utilizes a powerful magnetic field and radio waves to generate these images, without the use of ionizing radiation like X-rays or CT scans.

The process involves placing the patient inside a large, tube-shaped magnet. This strong magnetic field aligns the protons within the body's water molecules. Radio waves are then pulsed through the body, which temporarily knock these aligned protons out of alignment. When the radio waves are turned off, the protons realign with the magnetic field, releasing energy signals that are detected by the MRI scanner. Different tissues and organs emit different signals depending on their composition, allowing the scanner to differentiate between them and construct a detailed image.

MRI is particularly effective at visualizing soft tissues such as muscles, ligaments, tendons, the brain, and spinal cord. It is used to diagnose a wide range of conditions, including tumors, neurological disorders, joint injuries, and cardiovascular diseases. The procedure is generally painless, though some individuals may experience claustrophobia due to being in the enclosed scanner. The humming noise produced by the machine is also a characteristic feature. The images produced by MRI are often in slices, and can be reconstructed into 3D images for better analysis.
