Magneetisoituminen, or magnetization, refers to the process by which a material becomes a magnet. This occurs when the magnetic moments of the atoms within the material align in the same direction. In ferromagnetic materials, such as iron, nickel, and cobalt, this alignment can be achieved through various methods.

One common way to magnetize a material is by exposing it to a strong external magnetic field. This field exerts a force on the magnetic moments, causing them to rotate and align with the field. Once the external field is removed, the material retains some or all of its magnetization, becoming a permanent magnet. The strength of the resulting magnetism depends on the material's properties and the strength of the applied field.

Another method of magnetization is through induction. If a ferromagnetic material is placed near a permanent magnet, its magnetic moments will align with the field of the permanent magnet, making the material itself temporarily magnetic. This induced magnetism disappears when the external field is removed.
