magmatology
Magmatology is the branch of geology that studies magmas—the silicate melts that feed igneous rocks. It concerns the origin of magmas, their physical and chemical properties, and the processes by which they evolve, crystallize, differentiate, and erupt. While closely related to petrology and volcanology, magmatology emphasizes the behavior of melts through mantle and crustal media, and the generation and emplacement of igneous bodies.
Core topics include melt generation by partial melting, fractional crystallization, magma differentiation, crustal assimilation, and magma
Methods and data: petrological analysis of rocks and minerals; geochemical and isotopic tracing; experimental petrology to
Applications include interpretation of crustal evolution, tectonic processes, and volcanic hazards; exploration for magmatic ore deposits;
