mZ1

The mZ1 is a modular unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) designed for rapid deployment in search-and-rescue, industrial inspection, and hazardous-environment exploration. The designation suggests modularity and the first model in a Zeta-series.

Design and capabilities: The chassis measures approximately 410 mm by 320 mm by 180 mm and weighs 11.5 kg. It is powered by a 48V lithium-ion battery providing up to 384 Wh, enabling up to six hours of operation with a light payload at moderate speeds. It features a four-wheel suspension, swappable payload bays, and a protective shell for rugged use. Sensor suite includes a 2D LiDAR, stereo cameras, and a thermal imaging camera; communications include dual-band radio (2.4/5 GHz) with a range up to 1 km line-of-sight and optional satellite backhaul. Autonomy is enabled by SLAM-based navigation, obstacle avoidance, and task-level autonomy for predefined missions; control can be via handheld console, tablet, or autonomous mission planner.

Development and deployment: First described in a 2020 robotics white paper, with prototype field testing conducted in 2021 and early deployments in 2022 to municipal search-and-rescue and industrial facilities. The model was designed to be affordable and easy to customize, encouraging community additions to its payload ecosystem.

Variants and reception: In addition to the base mZ1, a higher-end mZ1 Pro offers extended endurance (up to 10 hours) and greater payload capacity, while the smaller mZ1 Nano targets micro-operations with lighter frame. Critics note that while the platform is versatile, endurances can vary with terrain and payload, and price remains a consideration.
