Lüpjuottamista, often translated as "through-hole soldering" in English, is a fundamental electronic component mounting technique. It involves inserting the leads of a component through pre-drilled holes in a printed circuit board (PCB). The component is then secured by soldering the leads to the copper pads on the opposite side of the board. This method is known for its mechanical robustness and good electrical connection, making it suitable for components that experience significant physical stress or require reliable conductivity.

The process typically begins with placing the component into the designated holes on the PCB. For manual soldering, a soldering iron is used to heat both the component lead and the copper pad simultaneously. Solder, usually in the form of a wire or paste, is then applied to the heated joint, melting and flowing into the gap between the lead and the pad, creating a strong electrical and mechanical bond upon cooling. Automated wave soldering is another common method for mass production, where PCBs with inserted components pass over a wave of molten solder, which solders all the through-holes in one go.

Through-hole soldering is often contrasted with surface-mount technology (SMT), where components are soldered directly onto pads on the surface of the PCB without passing through holes. While SMT allows for smaller and denser circuit designs, through-hole soldering remains relevant for larger components, connectors, and applications demanding higher durability. It is a widely taught and practiced skill in electronics manufacturing and hobbyist endeavors.
