Lämpöstressiltä refers to the state of stress experienced by an organism due to exposure to high temperatures. This can occur in humans, animals, and plants, and the specific physiological responses vary depending on the species and the intensity and duration of the heat exposure. In humans, heat stress can manifest as fatigue, dizziness, headache, and in severe cases, heatstroke, a potentially life-threatening condition characterized by a dangerously high body temperature and central nervous system dysfunction.

The body has several mechanisms to cope with heat, such as sweating, which cools the body through evaporation, and vasodilation, where blood vessels near the skin surface widen to release heat. However, when these mechanisms are overwhelmed, or if the ambient temperature is too high for effective heat dissipation, heat stress can develop. Factors that increase susceptibility to heat stress include dehydration, prolonged physical exertion in hot environments, certain medical conditions, and inadequate acclimatization to heat.

Preventing heat stress involves measures like staying hydrated, seeking shade or cooler environments during hot periods, wearing light and breathable clothing, and avoiding strenuous activities during peak heat hours. Acclimatization, gradually exposing oneself to warmer conditions over a period of days or weeks, can also significantly improve the body's tolerance to heat. In agricultural settings, heat stress in crops can lead to reduced yield, poor quality produce, and increased susceptibility to pests and diseases, impacting food security. Similarly, livestock can suffer from reduced productivity, reproductive issues, and increased mortality under heat stress.
