Lämpöjohtojen, a Finnish term, translates to heat pipes in English. These are passive heat transfer devices that exploit the principles of evaporation and condensation to move heat from one location to another. A heat pipe consists of a sealed tube, typically made of copper, which contains a working fluid. This fluid is chosen based on the operating temperature range and can be water, ammonia, or other substances.

The operation of a heat pipe is based on a closed thermodynamic cycle. At the heat source end, the working fluid evaporates, absorbing heat from the source. The vapor then travels along the hollow interior of the pipe to the cooler end, where it condenses back into a liquid, releasing the absorbed heat. A wick structure, often a porous material lining the inside of the tube, uses capillary action to draw the condensed liquid back to the heat source, completing the cycle.

Heat pipes are highly efficient due to their high thermal conductivity, which can be orders of magnitude greater than solid conductors. This efficiency makes them valuable in applications requiring effective thermal management, such as cooling electronic components, spacecraft, and in solar energy systems. Their passive nature, meaning they require no external power source to operate, further enhances their utility and reliability. The effectiveness of a heat pipe is influenced by factors like the working fluid, the wick material, the length and diameter of the pipe, and the orientation relative to gravity.
