It refers to the system of dividing runners into different starting waves or corrals based on their anticipated finishing times.

The purpose of lähtöryhmien is to improve the race experience for all participants. By grouping runners with similar paces together, it aims to reduce congestion on the course, especially in the early stages. Slower runners are placed in later starting groups, preventing them from being obstructed by faster runners, while faster runners can begin at their intended pace without being held back.
