This intricate system works in parallel with the circulatory system, collecting excess fluid, waste products, and foreign substances from tissues and returning them to the bloodstream. The fluid within these vessels is called lymph, a clear or milky fluid containing white blood cells, particularly lymphocytes, which are key to fighting infection.

The lymphatic vessels begin as tiny, blind-ended capillaries in the tissues, gradually merging into larger vessels. These larger vessels eventually collect lymph from different regions of the body and channel it through lymph nodes. Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped organs strategically located along the lymphatic vessels. They act as filters, trapping pathogens, cancer cells, and other harmful materials. Within the lymph nodes, lymphocytes can mount an immune response to combat infections.

The lymphatic system also includes several larger organs that contribute to its function. The spleen, tonsils, and thymus are all considered lymphoid organs. The spleen filters blood, removing old red blood cells and housing lymphocytes. The tonsils are located in the throat and trap inhaled or ingested pathogens. The thymus, primarily active during childhood, is where T lymphocytes mature.

Disruptions to the lymphatic system can lead to conditions such as lymphedema, characterized by swelling due to the accumulation of lymph fluid. Infections can also cause lymph nodes to enlarge, commonly known as swollen glands. The health of the lymphatic system is therefore essential for overall bodily well-being and defense against disease.
