Luftvägsobstruktion refers to a blockage in the airway that impedes the normal flow of air into and out of the lungs. This obstruction can occur at various levels of the respiratory tract, from the nose and mouth to the trachea and bronchi. Causes are diverse and can range from simple, temporary issues like choking on food to more serious conditions.

Common causes include foreign body aspiration, particularly in children, where small objects are inhaled into the airway. Swelling of the airways due to allergic reactions, infections like epiglottitis or croup, or trauma can also lead to significant obstruction. In adults, conditions such as severe asthma attacks, anaphylaxis, or the presence of tumors in the respiratory tract can cause blockages. Chronic conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can also contribute to airway narrowing and obstruction.

Symptoms of luftvägsobstruktion vary depending on the severity and location of the blockage. Mild obstruction may cause noisy breathing, such as stridor or wheezing. More severe cases can result in difficulty breathing, gasping for air, cyanosis (bluish discoloration of the skin due to lack of oxygen), and in critical situations, loss of consciousness and respiratory arrest. Prompt recognition and intervention are crucial to restore airflow and prevent potentially life-threatening consequences. Treatment strategies depend on the underlying cause and may involve removing the obstructing object, administering medications to reduce swelling or open airways, or in severe cases, requiring emergency procedures like intubation or tracheostomy.
