Luftvägsmanagement, often translated as airway management, refers to the medical procedures and techniques used to establish and maintain a clear and functional airway. This is critical for patients who are unable to breathe adequately on their own due to illness, injury, or anesthesia. The primary goal is to ensure sufficient oxygenation and ventilation of the lungs.

Basic airway management techniques involve positioning the patient, using airway adjuncts like oral or nasal airways, and performing maneuvers to open the airway, such as the head-tilt chin-lift or jaw-thrust. These methods are often employed in emergency situations or by pre-hospital medical personnel.

More advanced airway management includes the use of supraglottic airway devices, such as laryngeal masks, which are inserted into the pharynx to create a seal around the larynx. Endotracheal intubation, where a tube is passed through the nose or mouth into the trachea, is considered the gold standard for securing a definitive airway. This allows for mechanical ventilation and protection of the airway from aspiration.
