Low fantasy is a subgenre of fantasy fiction that deliberately downplays or omits many of the common tropes associated with high fantasy. Instead of epic quests in magical realms with clear good versus evil dichotomies, low fantasy typically focuses on more mundane, realistic settings and characters. Magic, if present at all, is often subtle, rare, or has significant drawbacks and consequences. The emphasis is usually on character development, psychological realism, and believable human struggles, even when fantastical elements are introduced.

Unlike high fantasy, which often features entirely new worlds with distinct cultures, histories, and magical systems, low fantasy is frequently set in a world that closely resembles our own, or a historical period of Earth. This proximity to reality serves to ground the narrative and heighten the impact of the fantastical elements when they appear. The conflicts in low fantasy are often personal and political rather than world-saving battles. Characters might be ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances, or individuals grappling with their own moral ambiguities. The tone tends to be more somber or gritty, reflecting a less idealized view of the world. Examples can be found in stories where magic is a hidden or feared aspect of society, or where the supernatural intrudes upon an otherwise ordinary existence without fundamentally altering the fabric of the world.
