Loodpadden are a species of amphibian found in certain European countries, primarily in the Netherlands. The name "loodpadden" translates to "lead toads" in English, likely due to their somewhat dark coloration and robust build. They are characterized by their warty skin, which helps them blend into their environment and provides some protection. Loodpadden are nocturnal, spending daylight hours concealed under logs, stones, or in burrows, emerging at night to hunt for insects and other invertebrates.

Their breeding habits are typical of many toad species, with individuals congregating in shallow ponds or ditches during the spring. Females lay strings of eggs in the water, which develop into tadpoles. The tadpoles undergo metamorphosis, eventually developing into adult loodpadden. Despite their common name, they are technically frogs, belonging to the order Anura. Conservation efforts are in place in some areas due to habitat loss and pollution, which have impacted their populations. Their presence is often considered an indicator of a healthy wetland ecosystem.
