Lizozomale refers to anything related to lysosomes, the membrane-bound organelles responsible for intracellular digestion in many eukaryotic cells. Lysosomes house a collection of acid hydrolases that degrade proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids, supporting nutrient recycling and cellular remodeling. The lysosomal lumen is kept acidic, with a pH around 4.5 to 5.0, by proton pumps such as the V-ATPase.

Lysosomes originate from late endosomes and mature through regulated trafficking, with enzymes targeted to them in the Golgi apparatus by mannose-6-phosphate signals. Lysosome-associated proteins include LAMP1 and LAMP2 on the membrane and various solute transporters that move breakdown products into the cytosol.

Examples include Tay-Sachs disease (HEXA), Gaucher disease (GLA), Pompe disease (GAA), and Niemann-Pick disease (NPC1/2 or SMPD1). Treatments such as enzyme replacement therapy, substrate reduction therapy, and emerging gene therapies target the lysosomal system. The regulation of lysosome biogenesis involves transcription factors like TFEB, reflecting the central role of lizozomale pathways in cellular physiology.
