Liukulukuyksiköihin, known in English as floating-point units (FPUs), are specialized co-processors designed to perform arithmetic operations on floating-point numbers. These numbers are a way of representing real numbers that can have a fractional part, allowing for a wider range of values than integers. Early computers often lacked dedicated hardware for these operations, relying on software emulation, which was significantly slower. The introduction of FPUs revolutionized the performance of scientific, engineering, and graphics-intensive applications.

FPUs handle calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and more complex functions like square roots and trigonometric operations. They adhere to standardized formats, most notably the IEEE 754 standard, which defines how floating-point numbers are represented in binary and the rules for performing arithmetic on them. In modern computer architectures, the FPU is typically integrated directly into the central processing unit (CPU) as a distinct execution unit. This integration allows for very fast access and processing of floating-point data. The presence of a powerful FPU is a key factor in the performance of tasks like 3D rendering, video editing, complex simulations, and machine learning computations. Without an FPU, these demanding applications would be considerably less efficient.
