Litografialehdössä refers to a printing plate used in lithography. Lithography is a planographic printing process that relies on the principle that oil and water do not mix. In traditional lithography, an image is drawn or etched onto a flat stone or metal plate using a greasy substance.

The litografialehdössä, typically made of limestone or a treated aluminum plate, acts as the medium for this image. After the image is applied, the plate is treated with chemicals. These chemicals make the areas where the greasy image was applied receptive to oil-based ink, while the non-image areas become receptive to water. When the plate is inked, the ink adheres only to the greasy image areas. When paper is pressed against the inked plate, the ink transfers to the paper, creating the printed image.

Modern lithography, often referred to as offset lithography, uses thin, flexible metal plates, commonly aluminum, rather than heavy stones. These plates are also referred to as litografialehdössä in the context of the lithographic printing process. The principle remains the same: oil and water repulsion. The offset process involves an additional transfer roller (the blanket cylinder) between the printing plate and the paper, which further enhances the quality and consistency of the print.
