Lipline, commonly referred to as lip liner, is a cosmetic product used to define the edges of the lips and provide a base for lipstick. It is usually sold as a pencil, but retractable and gel-based versions are also available. Lipliners come in a range of shades, from neutral nudes to bold reds, and may have matte, satin, or creamy finishes. The primary purposes are to create a defined lip shape, prevent lipstick from feathering or bleeding into fine lines, and extend the wear of lip products. Some formulations include moisturizing ingredients.

Application of lipline typically involves several steps. Start with exfoliated and lightly moisturized lips. Choose a shade that matches the desired look—either close to the natural lip color or deliberately darker to alter the lip shape. Outline the lips along the natural vermilion border, or slightly beyond it if a fuller appearance is desired. For longer wear, the liner can be filled in across the entire lip surface before applying lipstick or gloss. The liner can be blended with a brush or fingertip to avoid harsh edges.

Types and formulas vary. Traditional pencils require sharpening, while retractable liners offer convenience. Gel-based liners often provide smoother glide and longer wear. Finishes range from matte to satin, and some formulas are designed to be water- or transfer-resistant.
