Limfiniai is a freshwater fish species belonging to the family Cyprinidae. The species is endemic to the Limfjorden basin in northern Europe, primarily occurring in slow‐moving rivers and lakes at altitudes below 200 meters. Morphologically, Limfiniai possesses a slightly laterally compressed body, a dorsal fin set well back from the pectoral fins, and a rounded caudal fin. The standard length ranges from 15 to 22 centimeters in mature individuals, with a streamlined coloration that blends with muddy substrates. Sexual dimorphism is subtle, although males develop enlarged anal fin rays during the spawning season between April and June.

Reproduction occurs in tributaries with gravel beds, where eggs are laid on submerged vegetation. The larval stage is fully aquatic and remains within the spawning grounds until the first winter, after which juveniles disperse downstream. The species exhibits a largely omnivorous diet, feeding on benthic invertebrates, small zooplankton and detritus. Limfiniai is a popular prey item for larger predatory fish such as the brown trout (Salmo trutta) and pike (Esox lucius).

The conservation status, as assessed by a regional fishery agency, is listed as “Least Concern” owing to stable population estimates and broad ecological tolerance. Nonetheless, local declines have been documented in heavily cultivated areas due to habitat fragmentation and pesticide runoff. Conservation measures include the restoration of riparian buffers and monitoring of water quality indices. Limfiniai has cultural significance for local communities, traditional fishing practices often incorporate a seasonal quota system to preserve the species for future generations.
