Liikahäiriöoireyhtymä, known in English as movement disorder, refers to a group of neurological conditions characterized by abnormal voluntary or involuntary movements. These disorders can affect coordination, speed, fluidity, and rhythm of movements. They are not a single disease but rather a broad category encompassing various conditions, each with its own underlying causes and specific symptoms.

Common types of movement disorders include tremors, where there are rhythmic shaking movements, dystonia, which involves sustained muscle contractions causing twisting and repetitive movements, and chorea, characterized by rapid, jerky, involuntary movements. Parkinsonism, a syndrome characterized by tremor, rigidity, slowness of movement (bradykinesia), and postural instability, is another significant group of movement disorders. Other examples include tics, myoclonus (sudden, brief muscle jerks), and athetosis (slow, writhing movements).

The causes of movement disorders are diverse and can include genetic factors, neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease, stroke, head trauma, infections, metabolic disorders, and certain medications or toxins. Diagnosis typically involves a thorough neurological examination, medical history, and sometimes imaging studies like MRI or CT scans, or blood tests to rule out other conditions.

Treatment strategies vary depending on the specific movement disorder and its cause. For some conditions, medications can help manage symptoms by affecting neurotransmitter levels in the brain. Physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy are often crucial for improving motor function, balance, and coordination. In certain cases, surgical interventions, such as deep brain stimulation, may be considered. The prognosis for individuals with movement disorders depends greatly on the underlying condition, its severity, and the effectiveness of treatment.
