Lihassyövyttä, also known as necrotizing fasciitis, is a severe bacterial infection that spreads rapidly and destroys the soft tissue, including fascia, which is a layer of connective tissue that surrounds muscles, nerves, and blood vessels. The condition is often referred to as "flesh-eating bacteria" due to its aggressive nature, though it is not caused by a single type of bacteria. Common culprits include group A Streptococcus, but other bacteria like Clostridium perfringens, Vibrio vulnificus, and certain types of staphylococcus can also be responsible, sometimes working in combination.

The infection typically enters the body through a break in the skin, such as a cut, scrape, or insect bite. It can also occur after surgery or in individuals with weakened immune systems, diabetes, or circulatory problems. Early symptoms can be vague and may include severe pain disproportionate to any visible skin injury, swelling, redness, and warmth. As the infection progresses, symptoms can worsen rapidly, leading to fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, and blistering. The affected area may become discolored, and tissue death can occur, presenting as black or dark purplish patches.

Diagnosis of lihassyövyttä is often made based on clinical presentation and confirmed through laboratory tests, including blood work and tissue cultures. Prompt medical intervention is crucial. Treatment typically involves aggressive surgical debridement to remove all dead and infected tissue, as well as high doses of intravenous antibiotics. In severe cases, amputation of the affected limb may be necessary. Despite treatment, lihassyövyttä carries a high mortality rate. Prevention involves meticulous wound care and prompt treatment of any skin injuries.
