Leuciscus is a genus of freshwater fishes in the family Cyprinidae, commonly known as daces. The genus is native to Europe and parts of western Asia, with the type species Leuciscus leuciscus, the common dace. Historically, many European forms were included in Leuciscus, but taxonomic revisions have moved several species to related genera such as Squalius or Rutilus.

Description and biology

Daces in Leuciscus are generally small to medium-sized, with streamlined bodies and a silvery to olive coloration. They have a small mouth and a single dorsal fin with soft rays. Size varies by species, typically ranging from about 8 to 40 cm, with larger individuals found in some members of the group. They are primarily omnivorous, feeding on aquatic insect larvae, crustaceans, small mollusks, algae, and occasionally plant material. Reproduction is usually seasonal, with eggs laid among vegetation or on submerged substrates in the spring or early summer. There is no parental care, and many species exhibit some degree of upstream movement to spawning grounds.

Leuciscus species inhabit rivers, streams, and occasionally lakes across Europe and western Asia. They prefer cool, well-oxygenated waters with moderate to fast currents, though some species can tolerate slower flows or still waters. Habitat quality, including clear water and diverse habitats, strongly influences their distribution and population status.
