Leprosariums, also known as leper colonies or lazarettos, were facilities established to house individuals suffering from leprosy, also known as Hansen's disease. Historically, these institutions were created out of a desire to isolate those infected, driven by fear and misunderstanding of the disease. Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, which primarily affects the skin, peripheral nerves, upper respiratory tract, eyes, and testes.
