Leaninitiativer refers to organized efforts within organizations to adopt lean principles—systematic reduction of waste and continuous improvement of processes—in order to deliver greater value to customers. Although its origins lie in the Toyota Production System, lean initiatives have been adopted across manufacturing, services, software development, and the public sector, often under names such as lean transformation or lean program.

Core principles include focusing on value from the customer's perspective, mapping the value stream to identify activities that do not add value, and eliminating waste (muda). Organizations seek to create continuous flow and, where appropriate, implement pull systems that produce only what is needed when it is needed, guided by a vision of ongoing perfection.

A typical lean initiative follows a structured framework: assess current processes, define a lean vision, map the value stream, run small-scale experiments using PDCA (plan–do–check–act), standardize successful changes, and expand them across the organization. Common tools include 5S, Kanban, value-stream mapping, kaizen events, and A3 problem-solving reports.

Benefits cited include shorter lead times, lower operating costs, higher quality, and improved customer satisfaction. Successful lean initiatives also tend to foster stronger cross-functional collaboration and a culture of continuous improvement. However, challenges include sustaining momentum, ensuring staff engagement, and avoiding overemphasis on cost-cutting at the expense of people or system reliability.
