A leaky integrator is a simple electronic circuit or a mathematical model that approximates the behavior of integrating a signal over time, but with a "leak" that causes the integrated value to decay if the input signal is absent. This leak is typically modeled as a resistance in parallel with a capacitor in an electrical circuit, or as a decay term in a mathematical differential equation.

In its electrical form, a leaky integrator consists of a resistor (R) and a capacitor (C). An input voltage is applied across the series combination of the input source and the resistor, with the capacitor connected in parallel across the resistor. The output voltage is taken across the capacitor. When the input voltage changes, the capacitor charges or discharges, attempting to follow the input. However, the resistor provides a path for the capacitor to discharge, causing its voltage to gradually decrease over time if the input voltage remains constant or is removed.

Mathematically, the behavior of a leaky integrator can be described by a first-order linear ordinary differential equation. For an input signal x(t) and an output signal y(t), the equation is often expressed as τ dy(t)/dt + y(t) = x(t), where τ is the time constant of the integrator. This time constant, τ = RC in the electrical circuit, determines how quickly the integrator responds to changes and how fast it leaks. A larger time constant means a slower response and a slower leak, while a smaller time constant results in a faster response and a quicker leak. Leaky integrators are fundamental building blocks in signal processing, control systems, and computational neuroscience due to their ability to perform temporal averaging with a memory that fades.
