Leadvehicle refers to the vehicle directly ahead in the same lane or in a vehicle platoon. It serves as the reference point for speed and spacing in car-following dynamics, and the term is commonly used in driving, traffic flow theory, and autonomous vehicle research. In many texts it is also written as “lead vehicle.”

In driver assistance and autonomous driving, the leadvehicle plays a central role in determining how following vehicles behave. Adaptive cruise control systems track the leadvehicle’s distance and relative speed to decide acceleration or deceleration. If the leadvehicle slows, the following vehicle typically reduces speed to maintain a safe gap; if the leadvehicle accelerates or disappears from sensors’ range, the system may adjust to a preset target speed. Cooperative adaptive cruise control expands this concept by exchanging information via vehicle-to-vehicle communication, enabling tighter, more coordinated headways.

In traffic flow and platooning, the leadvehicle functions as a boundary condition for the flow of vehicles behind it. In a platoon, the leadvehicle sets the pace and the followers maintain a designated time headway. Benefits of such arrangements include higher road capacity, smoother traffic dynamics, and potential fuel savings, while challenges include the leadvehicle’s acceleration limits, sudden maneuvers, and sensitivity to disturbances that can propagate backward through the group.

Sensing and safety considerations for the leadvehicle involve radar, lidar, cameras, and sometimes GNSS data, with increasing reliance on V2V and V2I communications for improved coordination. Limitations include sensor blind zones, latency, and the risk of string instability during abrupt leadvehicle actions.
