Natural fibers like jute or sisal were traditionally used, but modern synthetic ropes, such as nylon or polyester, are often preferred due to their superior strength, durability, and resistance to rot and abrasion. The size and diameter of the cord are chosen based on the load the lashing will bear and the size of the objects being bound. Proper tensioning is key to an effective lashing, ensuring the structure remains stable under stress.
