Lashingscords

Lashingscords, often shortened to lashings, are a fundamental technique in many outdoor and survival situations, primarily used for securely binding objects together, particularly poles or spars, to create structures. These structures can range from temporary shelters and rafts to more complex frameworks for bridges or signal fires. The strength and stability of a lashed structure are directly dependent on the type of lashing employed and the skill with which it is executed.

Several common types of lashings exist, each suited for different purposes. The square lashing is perhaps the most versatile, used to bind poles that cross at approximately a right angle. It involves wrapping the cord around both poles in a crisscross pattern, followed by frapping turns which constrict the initial wraps, creating a tight and secure bond. The diagonal lashing is employed when poles cross at an angle other than 90 degrees, or when there is a need to reduce racking or prevent the structure from twisting. This lashing also utilizes frapping turns to achieve its tightness. Shear lashing is used to bind two poles that lie parallel to each other, often used for joining poles end-to-end to extend their length or to create a larger surface area.

The choice of cordage is also critical. Natural fibers like jute or sisal were traditionally used, but modern synthetic ropes, such as nylon or polyester, are often preferred due to their superior strength, durability, and resistance to rot and abrasion. The size and diameter of the cord are chosen based on the load the lashing will bear and the size of the objects being bound. Proper tensioning is key to an effective lashing, ensuring the structure remains stable under stress.
