This surgical technique is often referred to as "keyhole surgery" because it involves making only a few small incisions, typically between 0.5 to 1.5 centimeters in length, rather than one large opening. Specialized instruments, such as graspers, scissors, and cautery devices, are then introduced through these small incisions to perform the necessary surgical procedures.

Scarring is also significantly less noticeable. This approach is widely used for a variety of procedures, including gallbladder removal, appendectomy, hernia repair, and certain gynecological and urological operations.

While highly beneficial, laparoscopic surgery is not suitable for all patients or all types of procedures.
