Land imaging refers to the capture and analysis of images of the Earth's land surface for mapping, monitoring, and studying land cover, land use, and environmental conditions. It combines data from airborne, spaceborne, and ground-based sensors to observe changes across time and space.

Data sources include satellite missions such as Landsat, Sentinel-2, SPOT, and PlanetScope; radar imaging from missions like Sentinel-1; airborne photography and LiDAR; and, in some cases, ground-based imaging. Imaging can be multispectral, hyperspectral, or radar-based, with varying spatial, spectral, and temporal resolutions. Data are often radiometrically and geometrically corrected to produce usable reflectance values and accurate orthoimagery.

Common methods involve image processing and analysis, including radiometric and atmospheric correction, geometric correction and orthorectification, and various classification approaches. Analysts use supervised and unsupervised classification, object-based image analysis, change detection, and time-series analysis. Spectral indices such as the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) or enhanced vegetation index (EVI) help quantify vegetation health and cover. Advanced work employs data fusion, machine learning, and high-performance computing to handle large datasets.

Applications span agriculture and crop monitoring, forestry and ecosystem management, urban planning and land-use change assessment, water resources, soil and erosion mapping, disaster response, and climate research. Open data initiatives from programs like Landsat and Copernicus make many land-imaging datasets publicly available. Challenges include cloud cover, atmospheric effects, data volume, processing requirements, privacy considerations, and the need for standardized interoperability among diverse data sources.
