Leslie B. Lamport (born February 7, 1941) is an American computer scientist and programmer known for foundational contributions to distributed systems, formal methods, and typesetting.

Lamport introduced the concept of Lamport timestamps in 1978, a logical clock mechanism that orders events in a distributed system without relying on physical clocks. He co-designed the Paxos algorithm for achieving consensus in asynchronous distributed systems, with the initial paper published in 1998 and a widely cited simplified exposition in Paxos Made Simple (2001). In the realm of document preparation, Lamport authored LaTeX, a macro package for TeX that has become a standard for high-quality, consistent typesetting of mathematical and scientific content. He also developed the Temporal Logic of Actions (TLA) and the accompanying specification language TLA+, used for formal specification and verification of concurrent and distributed systems.

Careerwise, Lamport has worked at Digital Equipment Corporation's Systems Research Center and later at Microsoft Research Cambridge, where he contributed to both theoretical and practical aspects of computing. Recognition for his work includes the Association for Computing Machinery’s A.M. Turing Award in 2013 for contributions to distributed systems and formal methods. Lamport is a Fellow of the ACM and IEEE, and his research has profoundly influenced both the theory and practice of computer science.
