Laminate foil is a flexible, multi-layer material created by bonding metal foil with polymer films and sometimes paper. The metal layer is typically aluminum, which provides a high barrier to moisture, gases, and light, while the adjacent polymer layers add strength, heat sealing capability, and printability. The result is a laminate suitable for a range of packaging and shielding applications.

Typically, laminate foils are produced by adhesive lamination, extrusion lamination, or co-extrusion. Common layer combinations include aluminum foil with PET, polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), nylon, or ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) barriers. The exact structure is tailored to the desired barrier performance, mechanical properties, and sealing requirements. Laminate foils are often designed for food contact and must meet applicable safety regulations and standards.

Applications are extensive. In packaging, laminated foils protect snacks, coffee, confectionery, dried foods, and beverages, while enabling form-fill-seal and stand-up pouches, lids, and sachets. They are also used in pharmaceutical and cosmetic packaging, as well as in some electronics and insulation products where a moisture and light barrier is beneficial.

Advantages of laminate foil include excellent barrier properties, lightweight and flexible form, good printability, and reliable heat sealing. Limitations include the multi-layer construction that complicates recycling, potential compatibility considerations with contents, and variable performance depending on the exact layer stack.

Environmental considerations emphasize recycling challenges and the growing interest in mono-material or easily separable laminates, along with regulatory compliance for food-contact materials.
