Wiping or rag application is a method used for staining or applying thin, penetrating lacquers. A cloth is used to apply the lacquer, often working it into the wood grain. This method can create a more natural, hand-rubbed look and is suitable for antiquing or achieving a matte finish.

Dipping is a more industrial method where the object is fully submerged in a bath of lacquer. This ensures complete coverage, even in hard-to-reach areas. It is often used for mass production of small items.

Regardless of the method, proper surface preparation is crucial. The wood must be clean, dry, and smooth. Sanding between coats is often necessary to remove imperfections and ensure good adhesion for subsequent layers, contributing to a professional and lasting lacquer finish.
