Labor units are a generic unit of measure used to quantify the input of human labor in the production of goods and services. In practice, a labor unit is often defined as one hour of standard-skilled labor, or more generally as the amount of labor required to produce a unit of output under a defined standard. To account for different skill levels or conditions, organizations may apply efficiency or weight factors. For example, if standard productivity is one unit per hour, a task that takes three hours would be three labor units; if a worker is operating at 80% efficiency, the task may be recorded as 3.75 labor units.

Total labor units for a project equal the sum of the labor units for each task, which can then be converted to labor costs by applying the wage rate per labor unit. The approach is used in project estimation, capacity planning, and production scheduling to translate time requirements into a common metric.

Limitations include dependence on how the baseline is defined, susceptibility to changes in productivity, and potential confusion when comparing across organizations with different standards. Labor units are thus a useful but context-specific tool for quantifying labor input.
