Laastilevyä, commonly known as plasterboard or drywall, is a building material used for constructing interior walls and ceilings. It consists of a panel of gypsum plaster sandwiched between two layers of paper or fiberglass mat. This construction provides a smooth, continuous surface that is ideal for finishing with paint, wallpaper, or other decorative treatments.

The primary component of laastilevyä is gypsum, a naturally occurring mineral. The gypsum core is often mixed with additives to enhance its properties, such as fire resistance or moisture resistance. The paper or fiberglass facing provides structural integrity and a surface suitable for joint compound application.

Installation of laastilevyä involves cutting the panels to size and fastening them to a supporting frame, typically made of wood or metal studs. The joints between adjacent panels are then covered with joint tape and multiple layers of joint compound, also known as mud. Once the compound dries, it is sanded smooth to create a seamless finish.

Laastilevyä offers several advantages, including its relatively low cost, ease of installation, and good fire-retardant properties. It is a widely used material in residential, commercial, and industrial construction due to its versatility and ability to create a clean and finished interior space efficiently. Different types of laastilevyä exist, offering specialized characteristics for specific applications, such as moisture-resistant boards for bathrooms and kitchens, or sound-dampening boards for noise reduction.
