The healing cascade, or läkningskaskaden in Swedish, refers to the complex biological process the body initiates to repair damaged tissues. This intricate series of events is crucial for wound healing and maintaining tissue integrity. It begins immediately after an injury occurs.

The first phase is hemostasis, where bleeding is stopped. Platelets aggregate at the site of injury, forming a plug and releasing growth factors. Simultaneously, the coagulation cascade is activated, a chain reaction of protein activations that leads to the formation of fibrin, a mesh-like substance that stabilizes the platelet plug.

Following hemostasis is the inflammatory phase. Immune cells, such as neutrophils and macrophages, migrate to the wound to clear debris, bacteria, and damaged cells. This process, while essential for cleaning the wound, is characterized by redness, swelling, heat, and pain.

The proliferative phase is characterized by the rebuilding of tissue. Fibroblasts migrate into the wound and begin producing collagen, the main structural protein of connective tissue. Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels, also occurs to supply the regenerating tissue with oxygen and nutrients. Epithelial cells migrate across the wound surface to re-establish the skin barrier.

Finally, the remodeling or maturation phase can last for months or even years. During this stage, collagen is reorganized and strengthened, and the tissue gradually regains its strength. Scar tissue is formed, which is less elastic and vascularized than the original tissue, but it provides essential structural support. This entire sequence ensures that the body effectively responds to injury and restores function.
