Historically, refrigerants like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) were widely used. However, due to their detrimental effects on the ozone layer and their high global warming potential (GWP), these have been phased out or are in the process of being phased out under international agreements like the Montreal Protocol.

Current trends favor refrigerants with lower environmental impact. Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) have been a common replacement, offering good thermodynamic properties and zero ozone depletion potential. However, many HFCs still possess significant GWP, leading to ongoing efforts to transition to even more environmentally friendly alternatives.

These alternatives include hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) and natural refrigerants. HFOs have very low GWPs and zero ozone depletion potential, making them a promising option. Natural refrigerants, such as ammonia (R717), carbon dioxide (R744), and hydrocarbons (e.g., propane R290), have negligible environmental impact. However, each has specific characteristics that must be considered. Ammonia is highly efficient but toxic and corrosive, requiring specialized safety measures. Carbon dioxide operates at high pressures, necessitating robust system design. Hydrocarbons are flammable, demanding careful handling and system design to mitigate fire risks.

The selection process involves balancing performance requirements with safety and environmental considerations, often leading to a compromise based on the specific application and available technology.
